Opinions of students and faculty members about special study modules in the faculty of medicine of Akdeniz University: First results

Objective: Special Study Modules provide opportunities for students to develop their learning skills and areas of interest. Special Study Modules were first introduced at the Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine in the 2008-2009 academic year. The aim of this study was to evaluate the opinions of students and faculty members about Special Study Modules. Methods: This study was a descriptive study. Data were collected from students and faculty members who have participated in Special Study Modules. A total of 106 students and 19 faculty members gave feedbacks about the effectiveness of Special Study Modules. The students’ questionnaire form consisted of 11 questions. Data from faculty members were collected through a questionnaire composed of open-ended questions. Results: Both the students (73.6%) and the faculty members ( 81.1%) stated that Special Study Modules were very beneficial. Most of the students had positive thoughts about the benefits of Special Study Modules especially for using the internet. Conclusion: Students and faculty members have stated that Special Study Modules were very beneficial. As for the quantitative results of the faculty members’ opinions, it has been found that Specail Study Modules were successful.
